Your secret weapon: reach the people who hire, not the pile.  ·  Designed by a recruiter..
Behind the scenes

Why you're not hearing back (and what to do)

It's usually not you. It's the pile.

When you hit Apply, your application joins a stack. A recruiter like me is often filling around 20 jobs at once, and each one draws hundreds and hundreds of applicants. Many of them are qualified. Most of them will never hear a word, not because they're not good, but because of the sheer size of the pile.

What happens to your application

Applications land in the company's hiring system. A recruiter works through the stack while juggling other open jobs, interviews and offers. The hiring manager, the person who decides, often sees only a short list.

Silence rarely means "no." More often it means nobody got to you yet, or the job moved forward with the people who were already in front of them.

The move that changes it

Get in front of the people doing the hiring. Apply, then send a short note to the hiring manager and the recruiter the same day. Almost nobody does this, which is exactly why it works. Speaking as a recruiter: I appreciate it when a candidate emails me. Even if they're not a perfect fit on paper, I give them more consideration, I often call them, and I forward them to the manager. So don't be shy.

Keep it short and confident

  • Say you applied.
  • One detail from the job, two specifics about you.
  • Ask for a short call.
  • Follow up once, a week later.
